For someone who wants to write stories for a living, I’m unsure why talking about myself makes a blank page so daunting. This is precisely what I’m feeling at the moment. Sitting here at my desk after spending almost 10 years writing a Saga consisting of four novels, and I don’t know how to write a blog. If you are still reading, thank you for being merciful.
My name is Spring Cora, and I am the author of The Awaken Saga. A new independent press novel series available now at your favorite online booksellers. I have always loved telling a great story. Before I chose to begin this journey toward becoming a published author, I went to college believing that life was a story you wrote every day, and I wanted to find a career that allowed my life to tell one fantastic tale.
Well, I spent four incredible years at Colorado State University telling a fantastic story about friendship, love, and finding the people you will call your family for the rest of your life. Only to have it end in the summer of 2000 and for us all to go our separate ways. Being a ‘When life gives you lemons, you make lemon drop martinis’ kind of person, I did the only thing I could think of...I went back to Graduate School to follow a passion for religious storytelling. Bet you didn’t see that coming.
I spent eight years working to become a United Methodist Pastor. I believed I was serving my faith, my community, and the greater good in the world. I also thought being part of an ongoing story for 2,000+ years was extraordinary. I worked diligently to perfect my craft of preaching (or verbal storytelling) and all the other aspects that make up the pastorate ministry. I found friends in mission, and I thought this would be a grand saga.
Still, my time in ministry was fraught with a series of disasters, which now I understand after years of deep reflection and therapy were never my fault. I found myself in the unlikely position of rejecting the system of religious dogma and constraints. This was because I chose to love my family and friends instead of accepting the church’s ultimatum.
So I came back home with no money, no life, and no prospects of any kind. I also fell into a deep, dark depression that winter. It wasn’t the first time I went so far down ‘the rabbit hole’ that I couldn’t find my footing in the world, but it was one of the worst manifestations of my attacks in my entire life. I have been struggling with Anxiety and Depression since early childhood for context.
My mother, Vicki, was the one who reminded me of who I was. She told me that if I didn’t get the story of what had happened to me out of my head, it would consume me like a dragon. Well, I sat down at the computer much like I am now, and... nothing. For three days, I stared at a blank page and could not get the words to flow. Finally, I decided that if the events had happened to someone else, then maybe I could make the story come out of my head.
Drew Masen walked into my life, and she was willing to tell her story of what happened in that fretful situation and how she escaped finding a new, exciting life. So she and I began what would be a ten-year-plus quest to tell her story and mine. The Awaken Saga is one hundred percent fiction. However, to make every story believable, bands of truth must be woven in, and I’ll leave it up to you as readers to figure out those parts that are real and which are pure imagination. All I will say is that the names have been changed to protect the stupid, but the actual events were things I had to live through personally, and none of them were happy.
As time passed, I worked to create a life out of my passion and hobbies. I found a longing to write great stories. Something that has been part of my life since I was in school. So here I am, taking on the world and the art of storytelling in my own way and in my own time. This blog, my author’s website, and Social Media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr ) will be your gateway to me as an author. I also have a Goodreads, Fable, and Kindle Author page as @SpringCora. Feel free to follow me and see what I’m reading currently. (hint: I love fantasy romance)
